Introduction

One Direction is a band based in London, which consists of five young boys; Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson, who take pride in singing and their passion bring life to the songs that they have performed so far. Thus, propelling their two albums Up All Night released in 2011 and Take Me Home released in 2012.

Ever since, it’s release; it has broken several records and topped the charts of leading markets; giving them international fame and success.

These five adolescents were put together in a group, nicknamed as “One Direction” by Harry Styles, one of the boys of the group. This group finished third in the seventh series, in 2010 of British television singing competition, The X Factor. They were signed by Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records, and since then they did not turn back. Success has been walking along with them; maybe cause they all have one direction in their life, to sing with passion, and entertain the audience.

First Album Release

They released their first album in September 2011, where their debut single, “What makes you Beautiful topped the charts on UK Singles after becoming one of the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history. Other singles such as, “Gotta Be You” and “One Thing” peaked within the UK Singles Chart and ranked in the top ten. In November 2011, they signed a deal with Columbia Records in North America and “What Makes You Beautiful” was released in the United States in February 2012. It debuted at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming the highest debut for a British singer since 1998. Since then it has sold over 3 million units in the United States.

They performed their popular song from their very first album, “What Makes You Beautiful ” at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London.

Album, Up All Night was released globally in 2012 making it a fast selling debut album and topping charts in sixteen countries. The album entered the Guinness World Records as they entered at number one in the US Billboard chart 200 as the first British group in US chart history.

First World Tour

One Direction went on the Up All Night Tour in September 2011, which concluded in January 2012 where they had covered countries in Europe, Oceania, and North America, and they played over 60 shows. This group made a television appearance in Rockefeller Center on March 12th, 2012, and surprisingly they had an enormous turnout of fans. Teenage audience appealed to this band.

This band got mixed feedback from critics’ worldwide.

The Up All Night: the Live Tour DVD was released in May 2012 and was a global success as this video album had sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Their hit singles, “What makes you Beautiful”, and “Live while we’re young” is popular all around the globe; making their sales over 14 million in singles and 8 million in albums.

One Direction represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012. They were discovered in 2010, and within these 3 years; they have won two BRIT Awards, and three MTV Video Music Awards including Best New Artist. They have been voiced in 2012 as “Top New Artist” by Billboard. The Huffington Post named them, “The year of One Direction” in 2012.

Second Album Release

Another album of this band was released in November 2012. It was titled, “Take Me Home”. This album sold 540,000 copies in the first week of release in the United States. Debuted in the Billboard 200 and topped the charts in more than thirty-four other countries.

So far, their album, Up All Night was the number three best selling album of 2012 and sold 4.5 million units. Another album Take Me Home was the number four best selling album of 2012 and sold over 4.4 million units.

In 2012, One Direction performed at the Royal Variety Performance in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. They had a sold out show at New York City in December 2012.

In February 2013, this band released a cover version of “One Way or Another”, and “Teenage Kicks”,One Way or Another” as the 2013 Comic Relief single.

One Direction performed the song at 2013 BRIT Awards and won the newly created Global Success Award.

Recently, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced in November 2012 that a 3D Biopic film centering the band, One Direction is in production. The film is currently being directed by Morgan Spurlock and will be released by TriStar Pictures on August 30th, 2013.

Second World Tour

One Direction boarded on another world tour in February 2013, titled the Take Me Home Tour. This concert tour consisted of over 100 shows in Europe, North America, and Australasia. So far, ticket sales have been rapid. Over 300,000, sales were recorded within a day of release in UK and Ireland. Australia and New Zealand markets have grossed a total of US $15.7 million as 190,000 tickets have been sold out for over eighteen shows.
