Does YOUR cell-phone emit Radiation?
72
We all are extremely fond of our Cell-phones! Can't imagine a life with out it. Besides, having the world in our hands (smart phone) it is also a very handy gadget especially in times of distress or loneliness.
- Life without Cell Phone
Have you imagined life without your cell-phone? This hub talks about experimenting yourself without your cell phone and other topics regarding the above. Try it!
But, did we know that Cell phones emit electromagnetic radiation. X-rays is another example of electromagnetic radiation.
Radiation is energy that comes from a source and travels through material. This ionizing radiation produces charged particles in matter. Ionizing radiation is produced by unstable atoms and have excess of energy.
World Health Organization (WHO) has classified radiation coming from mobiles as carcinogenic. Additional research is being done into the long term usage of this instrument to gather information regarding the above statement.
Every phone has to pass a Federal Communication Commission (F.C.C) certification. A cell phone's maximax SAR level must be less than 1.6W/kg (watts per kilogram). In Europe, the level is 2 W/kg, while Canada allows a maximum of 1.6 W/kg.
The SAR level listed in the charts represents the HIGHEST SAR level with the phone next to the ear. SAR level varies between different transmission bands and different testing bodies can obtain different results. It is also possible for results to vary between different editions of the same cell phone.
The table below includes lists of cellphones by brand name.

IF your phone is in the high emission range, it is wise to change it or try to use a blue-tooth to talk. Avoid keeping this phone near your body.

I worked in the industry for my whole career and just recently retired. As to your question? Well, first of all, all Cell phones emit radiation. That is how they communicate, through the transmission of data over high frequencies. So your question is a Moot one.
But as to the SAR level? You are right on about knowing the SAR level of your phone. This level was set quite a while back as a standard that all phones should be held to.
BUT, you also need to remember that this transmission/radiation level is also an indication of the efficiency of your Cell phone for communications. By that I mean that a phone with a very low SAR level is probably going to have communication problems (dropped calls, etc.) in more remote areas where there are not as many Cellular repeater stations (read towers).
OH! and by the way, that number that you reported is not necessarily the level of your personal phone. This test is complex and time consuming, so the number publicized is a result of a very small statistical sampling of production phones.
What do I do? I use my Cell (Smartphone) extensively through-out the day. Do I worry about SAR, of course I do. I also, have been in the habit that all manufacturers recommend. I use my earpiece and I use the Speakerphone ........ a Lot!
And to keep things like this in perspective, you should look up the level of radiation you receive from a Cell phone compared to that of an X-Ray, that you mentioned.
And, Yes, looking back at what I just typed, I have to admit, I am an Engineer.
I've been reading more and more about radiation and the use of cell phones. Thank's for a well written hub. I can see that you put much research into this..Thank you Ruchira..
I never thought I will ever attach myself to a phone... but now it keeps me connected to all my beloveds and friends. Without it I feel like being alone in the middle of a desert. So what shall I do?
Moderate use of cellphones is essential for us to escape radiation. Thank you Ruchira for your wonderful hub.
So interesting Ruchira! I tried to do an EEG on myself while holding a cell phone and talking on it - wanted to see if it affected the height or width of my brain waves...only problem was both the machine and cell phone operate on the same band width of electricity so it kept blowing my cell signal out whe I would get too close to the only machine I and available:) lol.
I knew a little about this - but you did a sweet job here!!
Hi Ruchira, I agree with the above article. I minimize the use of cellphones as I know the harmful effects. I noticed that Europeans tends to use it less as compared to Asians and Americans. In Singapore, parents and children sitting in the park, walking on road, taking public transportation, it is too often used.

Ruchira, Thanks for this hub so full of information. In India specially people are aware but not concerned with this aspect. The only thing which they are worried is about the price and the tariff plan of the service provider. Useful.
Namaskar and warm wishes,
Manoj
