WHY is sugar sweet and medicine bitter?
5 Senses
We have 5 senses--taste, sight, smell, hearing, touch. That makes us quite self sufficient in our day to day lives. We can smell bad odour when it is around, we can see ugly or pleasant things, we can taste good or bad things, we can hear loud or subtle voices, we can respond to touch as well.
How do we define our Senses
We have been able to define each thing that happens with our senses as good or bad; as sweet or bitter; as ugly or pretty; as a pinch or a stroke. How is that possible?
What defines our Senses
It is our Brain.
Brains helps define our sensations, it has given a name to our tastes. We have wired ourselves in such a way that we can define anything good as pleasant and pretty. We have been able to define anything bad or bitter. It's like feeding an infant for the first time; he will not be able to express whether the food is good or bad. The definition of good or bad is defined by us. The poor child will be sipping the sugarless milk with delight or even licking on the Gerber food with loads of crushed spinach or carrots or peas. He will be so happy in his own world since, communication is not a concern for him. As long as the child is given his meals on time; he does not care of how it tastes. He will not care of the world around him. The infant is always seen smiling unless something bothers him then, we see a frown on his face. Such is the blissful life of the infant.
As the infant grows to be a toddler; he starts to express his feelings and his tastes for different foods, can be seen from the way he accepts the food when fed and the expressions he makes while eating it. At that stage, a toddler's brain is already wired up by now. Thanks to the company around him; he knows what is good and what is bitter. He knows; what food is yummy and what is yucky.
Man has such a bright perception on categorizing things that we grasp within a couple of months from our birth on this planet.
My Question and something to ponder upon!
When WE have the POWER to differentiate between bitter and sweet which means that sugar is sweet and medicines are bitter. We also have the POWER to wire our brain in such a way that we train it for sorrows as a disguised blessing and joy as temporary so, that helps us shift gears easily when we are tasting either sorrow or joy in our lives.
This will help us to be happy and content with whatever taste; LIFE has to offer.
